Myocarditis, when the heart muscle gets inflamed, can make it harder for the heart to pump blood possibly causing chest pain, shortness of breath and irregular heartbeats. Pericarditis, when the thin lining around the heart (called the pericardium) becomes inflamed, can also cause sharp chest pain that feels worse when lying down.

The FDA has approved its requested updated versions of expanded warning labels for COVID-19 vaccines. As Healio previously reported, the FDA sent letters to Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech in April, directing them to expand the warning labels on their COVID-19 messenger RNA vaccines to include the age range when the risk for myocarditis and/or pericarditis is at its highest for young men.
