The San Diego County Board of Supervisors punted a vote on who will succeed Nora Vargas as chair after competing motions to elevate either Terra Lawson-Remer or Jim Desmond to the role failed in votes down partisan lines.

With the departure of Nora Vargas, a Democrat, the board's current make-up is two Democrats (Terra Lawson-Remer and Monica Montgomery Steppe) and two Republicans (Joel Anderson and Jim Desmond).

Lawson-Remer, officially vice chair, nominated herself to succeed former District 1 Supervisor Nora Vargas, who announced last month that she would not serve a second term.
