Longtime Big 12 basketball coaches such as Kansas' Bill Self and Houston's Kelvin Sampson are not familiar with new BYU coach Kevin Young, which is OK with the former Phoenix Suns assistant.

One of the most significant talking points from every coach, including Young, at Big 12 Media Day was the league's overall competitiveness. With five teams in the top 10 of the AP Poll and 10 teams in Ken Pom’s top 50 programs in college basketball, the new 16-team Big 12 Conference is one of the deepest and most talented leagues in the country.

The Cyclones and Cougars remained 1-2 for the fourth consecutive week in the Big 12 Power Rankings. Iowa State received 10 of a possible 16 first-place votes from a panel of media who regularly cover the league. BYU received the remaining six first-place votes (down from seven).

Again, the Cougars hold on to the top spot in these power rankings by virtue of their two wins over teams currently in the top 25 — and with Kansas State and SMU playing well and winning, that only strengthens the perception of those BYU victories.
