The pursuit of Kevin Durant has long eluded NBA teams, and the Boston Celtics were among the most aggressive suitors. The Celtics, somewhat famously, had the second-best odds at the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. They ultimately fell to No. 5, leapfrogged by the Blazers, Sonics and Hawks.

Durant is among the most plug-and-play superstars in league history. The Thunder don't have to worry about his arrival derailing Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams or Chet Holmgren. They also have the draft-pick stash and room beneath the luxury tax to make the math work without obliterating too much of the rotation.

Durant joined the Golden State Warriors instead. Three years, two NBA championships and one dust-up later, Durant successfully recruited Kyrie Irving from the Celtics to the Brooklyn Nets in 2019 free agency. There ended Boston's dream of ever landing Durant in green. Or so we thought.
