Firefighters hope to take advantage of a break in the winds Thursday morning as they continue to battle the Mountain Fire in Ventura County that has already scorched thousands of acres and destroyed dozens of homes.

A wildfire started in the Somis area on Wednesday morning and tore through 22 square miles by the evening, destroying dozens of homes, sending residents to the hospital and forcing evacuations in Ventura, Camarillo, Santa Paula, Fillmore and points in between.
