White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Monday the U.S. is “so close to a ceasefire and hostage deal” in Gaza, as President Biden races to secure an agreement on a major foreign policy objective before leaving office in a week.

Israel and Hamas have been holding indirect talks for more than a year aimed at ending the war in Gaza and returning the hostages to Israel.

The Biden administration sees a possible Gaza truce as soon as this week, White House national security advisor Jake Sullivan told Bloomberg News on Monday, adding that there were no guarantees that the parties would agree to such a deal.

Officials said the coming days would be critical for ending more than 15 months of fighting that has destabilized the Middle East.

We" are coordinating closely with the incoming administration to make maximum use of this particular period to get this thing done," Sullivan said.

Sulivan underscored the administration's relentless efforts, led by Middle East envoy Brett McGurk who has spent more than a week in the region negotiating the details. He mentioned ongoing talks with Qatar’s prime minister and Israeli officials,
