The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging some people to get additional doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for stronger protection against the virus.

For people aged 65 or older and those who are immunocompromised, the CDC now recommends receiving a second dose of this year's COVID vaccine six months after they get their first shot. The CDC still recommends that everyone ages 6 months and older get a current COVID-19 vaccine this fall.

In a statement, the CDC said Director Dr. Mandy Cohen had endorsed the second-shot recommendation from the agency’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. The recommendation covers people 65 and over and those who are “moderately or severely” weakened immune systems, the statement said.
