The Washington Post’s publisher announced Friday that it will not make an endorsement in this year’s presidential contest, for the first time in 36 years, or in future presidential races.

The Washington Post won’t make an endorsement for president this year. Ben Mullin from the New York Times first reported the news, which was confirmed by CEO Will Lewis shortly thereafter. The announcement follows the same decision from the Los Angeles Times earlier this week, prompting a top editor to resign.

In his editorial, Lewis cited the Post’s decision not to publish an endorsement in the race between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon in 1960. Nixon would later be implicated in the Watergate scandal, which generated 69 indictments and 48 criminal convictions in one of the biggest political corruption scandals in American history..
