Within hours of taking office, President Donald Trump terminated the Secret Service detail that was assigned to his former national security adviser John Bolton, Bolton confirmed to CNN on Tuesday.

John Bolton has said he is at risk of attack by Iran after Donald Trump removed his Secret Service protection within hours of taking office.

Bolton, who frequently stakes out hawkish views about Iran, has had a 24/7 security detail from the Secret Service since December 2021. The Justice Department has said that during that time a member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard attempted to hire a hitman in the United States to take him out.

Bolton departed the first Trump admin in 2019 and has continued to require Secret Service protection due to threats from Iran.

Former U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton lost his Secret Service protection after President Trump terminated it amid threats against him by Iran. Bolton criticized Trump’s decision, blaming his policy decisions and accusing him of self-interest.

"I am disappointed but not surprised that President Trump has decided to terminate the protection previously provided by the United States Secret Service," John Bolton said.
