The Indian federal government took over direct control of the restive northeastern state of Manipur on Thursday after the region's chief minister resigned amid ethnic violence that has killed at least 250 people over two years and displaced thousands.

The imposition of President's rule was necessitated in Manipur as the deadline to convene the Assembly lapsed on February 12, three days after N Biren Singh resigned as the Chief Minister. Under President's rule,

Announcing the President rule, Ministry of Home Affairs said President Droupadi Murmu is of the opinion that "a situation has arisen in which the government of that state cannot be carried on in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution".
