The 31st annual Screen Actors Guild Awards opened with a skit in which Jean Smart appeared as her “Hacks” character Deborah Vance, an aging standup comedian, as she and some of her costars mistakenly believe Vance was booked to host the show.

While stars including Selena Gomez and Timothée Chalamet gathered for the 2025 SAG Awards in Los Angeles, several actors such as Martin Short and Jonathan Bailey were unable to attend.

While channeling Deborah Vance from Hacks, Smart learned that she had been fired from hosting the 2025 SAG Awards because she hadn’t paid her dues in years. At the end of the segment, she’s offered to take “The Substance” before Bell takes control as host.
