The Calcutta High Court granted permission for the West Bengal government to appeal the life sentence given to Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar hospital doctor's rape and murder case.

The West Bengal government on Tuesday moved the Calcutta High Court to file an appeal seeking death penalty of the convict in the RG Kar hospital doctor's rape and murder case and secured the court’s necessary permission.

KOLKATA: A division bench of the Calcutta High Court will hear on Wednesday the plea by the West Bengal government challenging the verdict of a special court in Kolkata in the rape and murder of a woman doctor of state-run R.

The convict Sanjay Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court in Kolkata on Monday in the August 2024 rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor at the city’s RG Kar Medical Colleg

Sanjay Roy was earlier awarded life imprisonment after being convicted of raping and murdering a doctor at RG Kar Medical College And Hospital.

The appeal was accepted by a division bench of justice Debanshu Basak and justice Shabbar Rashidi. After the court pronounced the sentence, chief minister Mamata Banerjee had announced on Monday evening that the state would approach the Calcutta High Court challenging the verdict.

A day after Mamata Banerjee expressed 'shock' over Sealdah Court's verdict in the RG Kar rape and murder case, the West Bengal government moved the Calcutta High Court demanding the death penalty for the convict.
