Chipmaker Intel has won a fresh victory in a long-running battle against European Union competition watchdogs after the bloc’s top court confirmed a lower tribunal’s decision to overturn a billion-euro antitrust penalty.

Intel scored a win after the European Union’s top court ruled antitrust officials in the bloc could not reimpose a penalty of $1.14 billion on the company in a long-running case over alleged anticompetitive practices in the market for computer chips.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) -EU Court of Justice, Europe's top court, ruled in favour of Intel, ending a nearly two decade-long fight between the U.S. chipmaker and EU regulators who had said it had tried to thwart a rival.

Intel Corp. won the latest round of an epic legal battle with the European Union over a case that led to a once-record antitrust fine of €1.06 billion ($1.1 billion).

The EU's Court of Justice upheld the General Court's decision to quash a €1.06B ($1.2B) fine imposed on Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) in an antitrust case. The Court of Justice of the European Union, or CJEU, consists of two courts — the Court of Justice and the General Court.
