During his time in France, Vincent van Gogh lived in Paris, Arles and Saint-Remy-de-Provence and finally in Auvers-sur-Oise just outside Paris, where he died in 1890. The fact that he spent much of his working life in France leads many to wonder whether he was French.

Vincent was delighted with the bright light and colours in Arles, and set to work enthusiastically, painting orchards in blossom and workers gathering the harvest. He also made a trip to the coast, where he painted the boats. His style became looser and more expressive.

May 18, 2024 · The renowned Impressionist artist Vincent Van Gogh spent a little over a year living in Arles, but it was an extremely prolific period for him, creating over 300 drawings and paintings here between February 1888 and May 1889.

Vincent moved to Arles on 20 February 1888. After two years in Paris, he was tired of the bustle and demands of city life and longed for the sunshine and vibrant colours of the south. Upon arrival in Arles, Vincent took a room at the hotel-restaurant Carrel, and later, one at Café de la Gare.

Vincent van Gogh arrived in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence on 8 May 1889 after suffering a major mental crisis in which he cut off his earlobe. Arriving from Arles, he voluntarily committed himself to Saint-Paul de Mausole psychiatric hospital.
