Multiple people on reddit Sony forums reported same, spoke to customer care and they told they have seen multiple issues like so but they won't fix mine as warranty expired 3 weeks after one year.

Oct 30, 2019 · As for the Dali's the sound just improved even further, actually got some of the missing oomph/warmth back, whereas the Sony's sounded exactly the same - as in not very good. Not fair to the Sony's I also tried the Dali's connected via USB to my MacBook to get the lossless 44.1/16bit quality from Deezer Hifi, and they sounded even better yet.

You'll see on close examination that the shape of the plastic part of the bud itself is very different: flat rather than the curve of the XM5. I wonder whether it's the curved shape that somehow prevents the XM5s form going in deep enough/leads to their instability.

But you can't know that because the manufacturer doesn't say it and you didn't test it. Nevertheless you state that "The Sonys are comfortable enough for a marathon".

Aug 1, 2019 · As an owner of a pair of Sony WF-1000XM3, I must say the noise cancelling is underwhelming at best. The main problem, and it may apply to all of these, is the seal between buds and ear. If this is poor, noise leaks past, there is zero cancelling, and total loss of bass.
